History of Senseo coffee pods

Senseo is a registered trademark from Dutch companies Douwe Egberts and Philips. Philips developed the breweing system and Douwe Egberts developed the different blends to put in the coffee pods. The machine was introduced in 2001 in the Netherlands and was a big success. Belgium, France, Germany, Austria and Denmark followed quickly. Senseo was introduced in the United Kingdom and it even went continental when it was introduced in the United States and Australia. By 2008, there were sold over 20 million machines and billions of Senseo coffee pods. New models of the classic Senseo machine were launched in 2007, 2008 and 2009. These machines were just slightly different from the outside. The essence is still the same: Tasty coffee made in just a minut

Trendsetter

Senseo coffee pods were the first really popular singe-serve coffee containers. After the success of Senseo coffee pods, other companies came up with comparable products. It started the trend to drink from single-serve pods instead of serving a coffeepot. A big advantage of pods compared to plastic cups may be the aroma. Paper Senseo coffee pods have more aroma while brewing, because the coffee is not fully sealed in plastic.
